Classroom Information

I am very pleased to announce that our classroom is an eMINTS classroom that provides students with a technology rich environment that focuses on inquiry-based learning or a constructivist model of learning to improve student performance in the classroom. eMINTS stands for Enhancing Missouri's Instructional Networked Teaching Strategies. You can learn more about eMINTS classrooms by visiting their web site at http://www.emints.org/. Our classroom has twelve computers, one for every two students, and focuses on teaching strategies that employ the use of cooperative learning techniques. Students become involved in learning as a community of learners.

Classroom Expectations

All students are expected to behave as responsible, respectful citizens in our learning community which is part of our character education program. Classroom norms are developed by the students collaboratively at the beginning of the school year. Students who choose to break a rule receive a tally. When three tallies are accumulated, a card is flipped and there is a loss of five minutes of recess. There are four cards. Green for go and good behavior, purple for a loss of five minutes of recess, yellow for caution and a loss of ten minutes of recess, and red for stop and a loss of all recess. A student who reaches a red card and continues with inappropriate behavior is sent to our buddy room, Ms. Atkinson's room, for a time out and completes a think sheet. A student who continues to misbehave after being sent to our buddy room is then sent to the office and a phone call is made to the parent.

We have five classroom rules taken from Chris Biffle's Whole Brain Teaching Strategies. They are:

1. Follow directions quickly.
2. Raise your hand for permission to speak.
3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.
4. Make smart choices.
5. Make your dear teacher happy.

You can visit Chris Biffle's Whole Brain Teaching web site at: Whole Brain Teaching.

Computer Usage Policy
All students and their parents sign a Computer Usage Policy to help ensure safe Internet use and appropriate use of classroom hardware.

Homework Policies
Students have homework on Monday through Thursday nights. They receive one page of reading and one page of math to do each night in their Homework Folder. They will also receive a half-sheet of paper to record how long they read each night in a book of their choice. Students are asked to read between ten to twenty minutes a night. Students reading below grade level are asked to read between fifteen and thirty minutes a night to help improve their reading level.

Regular Communication between Students and Parents

Students complete some assignments on our class Moodle located at: http://www.hallsville.org/elementary/blevins/moodle/
Our class Moodle provides students with immediate feedback on the work they submit if it is in a quiz form or written feedback if it is in a journal or essay format.
Parents can view our weekly newsletter at: http://www.hallsville.org/elementary/blevins/parentresources.html and clicking on Friday newsletter.
