Reading

Hallsville R-IV Elementary School uses the Four Blocks Reading structure to implement its language arts program. The two reading blocks are Guided Reading and Self-Selected Reading.
The Guided Reading Block is always focused on comprehension. The teacher chooses the material the students read and sets their purpose for reading. Then she guides the students to use the reading strategies needed for that material and that purpose. The Guided Reading Block has three parts. During the first segment the teacher directs a mini-lesson with the whole group of students. Then during the second segment the students work in small groups to read the introduced text as the teacher moves from group to group offering assistance and evaluating the students’ progress. Finally, during the third segment the teacher directs the whole group in closure activities.
The Self-Selected Reading Block is the part of the literacy program in which the students get to choose what they want to read. The children choose their own books from a variety of levels and genres in the classroom library. This block is also divided into three parts. It begins with the teacher reading aloud to the students. Then the students read independently while the teacher holds conferences with individual children. At the end of this block, students are given the opportunity to share what they have been reading with their peers.
