Supply List | 3rd Grade Progress Report

The third grade teachers utilize a hands on, active learning approach with many activity centers and projects.  Using a thematic approach, the students do in-depth studies of a variety of biomes such as the rain forest,  the Arctic, and the ocean.  A study of Missouri biomes is enhanced by activities through the Learning Exchange and a trip to EarthWorks in Kansas City.  Other student-centered activities include a study of Egypt.

Third grade uses the Four Block Reading approach with literature based reading. Literature is emphasized through various activities and through content area reading.  The 4 blocks structure includes Guided Reading, Writing, Working with Words, and Self-Selected Reading.  Accelerated Reader, a computer program, is used to motivate students to select books at appropriate reading levels.

In third grade, cursive handwriting is introduced through the Zaner-Bloser method. Students are also introduced to touch-typing/keyboarding skills through the Type-to-Learn computer program.

Third grade also emphasizes use of technology through research projects, as well as many other programs for reading, science and math enhancement.   Three of the four 3rd grade classrooms are eMINTS.  These classrooms are set up with special technology equipment including 12 student computers, a teacher workstation, scanner, color printer, digital camera, and a SMARTboard. There is ongoing teacher support and training to infuse the technology into our current curriculum and increase effective inquiry based learning.
