Hallsville High School - Social Studies

Courses:

AMERICAN HISTORY - (1/2 unit, Gr. 9) - Students study the development of the U.S. from post-reconstruction to the current era in this required course. Emphasis on economics, government, and geography is intertwined within each of the following units: the Frontier West, rise of industry, World War I, the 1920s, the Depression, and World War II. The class is designed to increase the student's interest in responsible citizenship.

 

CONTEMPORARY HISTORY - (1 unit, Gr. 11) - Students study US history and world history from World War II to the present day.

 

WORLD HISTORY - (1 unit, Gr. 10) - The 10 th grade social studies (world history) course is a year long survey course which chronologically investigates events throughout the world from the prehistoric era to World War II. In this course, students study: the origins of major cultures and societies; select economic, political, religious, and social systems; and the contributions which many cultures and people have made to the interdependent world. Activities and learning techniques will include the use of various resources to better develop the student's interest in social studies, increase understanding of self and others and help students become responsible citizens. Application of concepts and information will include presentations, reports, discussions, etc.

 

GEOGRAPHY I - (1/2 unit, Gr. 11-12) - This course is designed to emphasize physical geography, map/globe skills, and to provide an in-depth study of particular regions of the world (SE Asia and China). The history, geography, cultural heritage, political and governmental system, and the economic system of each region studied will be emphasized. Activities and learning techniques will include the use of various resources (i.e., videos, documents, text books, field trips, technology, projects, etc.). This will help to better develop the student's interest in social studies, increase understanding of self and others and help students become responsible citizens. Application of information and concepts will include presentations, reports, discussions; etc.

 

GEOGRAPHY ll - (1/2 unit, Gr. 11-12) - This course is designed to emphasize physical geography, map/globe skills, and to provide an in-depth study of particular regions of the world ( Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Africa, Middle East, and Russia). GEOGRAPHY III - (1/2 unit, Gr. 11-12) - This elective semester course is designed to provide an in-depth study of the United States, Canada, Middle America, Australia, South America, and Europe. Activities and learning techniques will include the use of various resources (i.e., videos, documents,, text books, field trips, technology, projects, etc.). This will help to better develop the student's interest in social studies, increase understanding of self and others and help students become responsible citizens. Application of information and concepts will include presentations, reports, discussions, etc.

 

ANTHROPOLOGY - (1/2 unit, Gr. 11-12) - This is an elective semester course designed to provide an in-depth study of physical anthropology, American Indian cultures, and archeology. The students will participate in a Dig simulation which allows them to create artifacts for other students to find, reconstruct, and analyze, using the methods of historical inquiry. The course will emphasize the likenesses (cultural universals) among people rather than the differences. Activities and learning techniques will include the use of various resources (i.e., videos, documents, text books, field trips, technology, projects, etc.). This will help to better develop the student's interest in social studies, increase understanding of self and others and help students become responsible citizens. Application of information and concepts will include presentations, reports, discussions, etc.

 

PSYCHOLOGY - (1/2 unit, Gr. 11-12) - This is an elective semester course designed to explore the behavior and thinking of people in order to facilitate a better understanding of themselves and a greater insight into the field of mental health. Subject units for this course include: physiological/biological influences on behavior and thinking, social/environmental influences on behavior and thinking, learning theory, memory and thinking, personality theory, stress and health, adjustment mechanisms, abnormal behavior, and theory. Activities and learning techniques will include the use of various resources (i.e., videos, documents, text books, field trips, projects, etc.). This will help to better develop the student's interest in social studies, increase understanding of self and others and help students become responsible citizens. Application of information and concepts will include presentations, reports, discussions, etc.

 

CURRENT ISSUES - (1/2 unit, Gr. 11-12) - This course is a semester elective that investigates global and American topics of society. The topics vary with each semester according to what is in the news. Lessons incorporate history, economics, government, and cultural influences within the news story or issue. This class emphasizes the importance of being an informed citizen.

 

AMERICAN GOVERNMENT - (1/2 unit, Gr. 9) - Students in this required semester class will study all aspects of our federal system of government and our state government. One quarter will be spent on Missouri government and one quarter on federal government. Students will study the U.S. and Missouri Constitutions. They will be required to pass a comprehensive exam over each Constitution in order to. graduate. This course will prepare students to be participants in a democracy, well informed citizens, and to have an understanding of the framework for U.S. and state governments.
