American History Syllabus

Course Outline:

American History studies more recent American history starting with the 1900s and ending in present times. We will be looking at events, people, decisions, and consequences (both positive and negative) of what has taken place during the last 105-110 years. America as we know it today is the way it is largely because of what has taken place during this time period. So in part, we are studying you, me, us…and how we got this way.

Course Syllabus: (you’ll get a more detailed syllabus with each unit)

1st Quarter – 1900-1929; Immigration, WWI, Stock Market Crash

2nd Quarter – 1930-1945; Great Depression & WWII

3rd Quarter – 1945-1973; Cold War, Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam

4th Quarter – 1973-Present

Course Materials:

The only materials I would recommend that you have for this class includes notebook paper, a folder or 3-ring binder for notes, assignments, & the Thought for the Day, and something to write with. Oh, and yourself but that’s a given.

Grades:

Grading in this class is based on several criteria including: Thought for the Day, homework & in-class assignments, quizzes, tests, & projects. If you come in, do your work, & (more importantly) turn it in then you will pass this class regardless of how good or bad you are at tests.

In Case of Emergency: (if you’ve got homework, notes, or study questions)

Cell Phone: 573-268-4504

Late Policy on Assignments:

Here’s how this works…if you don’t turn in the assignment on the due date, you have until the next morning to get it turned in. If you don’t turn it in the next morning, I’m calling your parents and requiring that you stay either that afternoon for 9th Hour or the following morning for Zero Hour to finish and turn in the assignment. You will continue attending Zero or 9th Hour until you get the assignment finished.

If you are involved in an after-school activity, I will be contacting your coach or sponsor and informing them of your missing assignment and requesting their help in not allowing you to participate in the activity UNTIL you turn in the assignment.

I will take late work up until the last day of each quarter!!! (But this shouldn’t be necessary)

Rules:

I don’t have many; you’re JUNIORS IN HIGH SCHOOL. Most of these you’re already familiar with. Cell phones…not a chance. If I hear it or see it, it’s mine. Food and drink…as long as you don’t spill or leave a mess you’re ok…if you do, you lose your privileges. IPod/MP3 players…when we’re working on assignments or solo projects AND you ask for permission…if you do it otherwise, it’s mine.
