Rhonda Haes

Wife, Mother and World Traveler

This is my 5th year at Hallsville and it is a wonderful place to be. After graduating from Central Missouri University in Warrensburg with a Bachelor of Science-Education degree in math and computer science, I taught in Kearney, Missouri for a year before moving with my husband to Lincoln, Nebraska. While there I waited tables, calculated group health insurance rates and retirement plans, operated an in-home daycare for 5 years and served as a foster parent for 2 years before we moved to Ashland. Yes, I commute 25 minutes each day and it is worth it.

I have been married over 20 years to a wonderful and caring man. Mike has been the love of my life for more than half of my life. He is a charter pilot (limo driver in the air) for Central Missouri Aviation at the Columbia Airport and has flown with movie stars and local business leaders. Sometimes he is gone for days at a time. We have 3 children. Jon is out of school and finding his way in the world. Leah is a Freshman at Ashland and enjoys reading, animals, ice skating and theatre. Ryan is in 7th grade at Ashland and plans on being a professional soccer player. After school, I go home to be a mom, teacher, cook, nurse, and all the other hats that parents have outside of their vocations. As time permits, I enjoy reading Christian historical fiction and murder mysteries.

My real passion is traveling. Because we are landlocked in Missouri most of my travels have involved water in one way, shape or form. Domestically, I have been skiing in Colorado, absorbing rays on beaches on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, walked across the Mississippi River in northern Minnesota, and waded in Lake Superior. My husband and I have chosen to vacation twice without the children. For our 10th anniversary, we spent a week at Lake Tahoe. This past summer, for our 20th anniversary, we cruised to Alaska.

I purchased my first passport in 2000 for a trip to Israel and spent 2 weeks on an historical trip with an archaeologist and a bunch of college students. To walk where He walked and see, in ruins, what He saw had a great impact on my personal life. In 2002, I chaperoned a group of middle school students on a 3 week adventure to Australia and New Zealand. We spent a couple of nights with host families in New Zealand, learning the local heritage, snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef, and fed dolphins at the same resort where they filmed a Scooby Do movie. In 2003, I traveled with high school students on a 3 week Mediterranean excursion. We landed in Rome and traveled by bus to Monaco, France and Spain . I came within 5 feet of Michael's David, stood inside the Sistine Chapel, and walked the streets of Madrid. The historical aspects appeal to me. I could never be a history teacher, but the museums and history of the places I visited are amazing. I co-chaperoned a 5 day trip of Hallsville students to Washington D.C/Williamsburg in 2006.

In a few months I will be traveling to Europe again. This time I will be with high school students from around mid-Missouri and we will land in Paris spending a couple of days, travel northeast through Austria and the Alps, gondola in Venice, and return via Rome. The trip will take about 3 weeks.
