Social Studies Mrs. Sides Ext 440 RSides@hallsville.org

Last week was crazy! I was out with the flu and then the snow days...needless to say, we are a little behind! This week we are beginning the Constitution. I handed out vocabulary words last week and we will review those tomorrow. We will discuss the 7 Constitutional Principles, the Articles of the Constitution, the Legislative Branch, and the Executive Branch. Just to plan ahead - next Friday is the end of the quarter and students will have a test over the Constitution. I will hand out a study guide. If you have any questions, please contact me.

*New character cards will be handed out Tuesday, February 26. This month, those students who are eligible for the character card party, will have a pizza party on Friday, February 29. Students can order pizza for $1/slice. Money will be turned into their original advisory teacher and we will need the money by Thursday.

Science Mr. Hague Ext 453 CHague@hallsville.org

Well that was a wonderful pre-spring break that we had last week! Hopefully we will be starting a warming trend to get rid of this wintery weather pattern. Speaking of weather, we are going to start a new unit on the atmosphere this week and this will eventually lead us to weather. Be sure to have a great week and please let me know if there is anything that I can do for you. Mr. Hague

Communication Arts Mrs. Deneke or Mr. Will Harris

KDeneke@hallsville.org Ext. 434 or Ext. 441 wharris@hallsville.com

This week we will begin our newspaper unit. Monday I handed out vocabulary chapter 6, which is due on March 7th. Tomorrow is our last Literature circle meeting and the book test will be due by this Friday for 25 points. March 6th, independent reading book #2 for the quarter is due for 50 points.

Reading Mrs. Pemberton Ext 487 JPembert@hallsville.org

This week in Reading we will be choosing our books for our next unit, literature circles. The following books are choices : Dogsong, The City of Ember, Sounder or Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. All are great books! The students will choose two books and give explanations of why the books would be a good choice for them. I will make the final decision. Once in literature circles each student will have a job; discussion leader, summarizer, journaler, and word smith. We will also have a “book-pal” in another room. If you have any questions about the unit, just give me a call or e-mail. Advisory: Keep brining in your boxtops! Have a Great Week! Mrs. P.

Special Services Mrs. Fadler Ext 438 pfadler@hallsville.org

In reading we are finishing up the literature sets we have been reading as a class. We will start the project on those next week – so there will be several work days to work on these. The students are also practicing skills in the Wilson’s Reading System. In English, we are continuing to work on spelling and vocabulary packets; DOL’s and have tests on Fridays.

The first book report deadline has come and gone. The second book report deadline is March 5 and the end of the quarter is March 7 – so there is not much time for late work to be turned in. Please make sure your student is reading their independent book at home and working on the draft of their book report. With this second book report, the rough draft has to be turned in with it as there are several students who are throwing together projects at the last minute and are not getting credit for their work as it is sloppy, poorly written, full of errors, etc. This is a project worth 100 points and should be turned in as their best work, with at least one or two editing processes before it is turned in. The requirements for the book reports are: books at their level or approved by me; do a book report from the list - they cannot repeat a report style or book they have already used; and they cannot use the book we are reading in class as one of the readings.

If you have questions, please contact me. My room is #23 and my extension is #438.

PRIDE Communication Arts Mrs. Wilson Ext 445 kwilson@hallsville.org

Comm Arts: We will finish up Chapters 3/4 and 5/6 this week. We are focusing on symbolism, similes, and metaphors, as well as new vocabulary. Students continue to rewrite questions into complete sentences and learn to predict, question, and respond while reading. We are REALLY enjoying the book-it's getting good!!

Study Skills: Students MUST bring their planner to class everyday. They also MUST bring ALL work from ALL classes (even if it is complete). We begin each hour be checking planners and homework. Parents, please check your child's planner every night and initial it. Thank you!
