Today in Science we are working with Mr. Bones! He is a cut out skeleton that we are decorating and labeling to help us remember the names of the bones. We also learned about the different joints found in the body today. We are going to be reviewing Wednesday and Thursday and there will be a bone test on Friday the 26th.

Parents, if you have not tried out the website for the math book, I would suggest you and your child do so. There are examples, sound, games, worked out solutions for problems from the book, sample quizzes, vocabulary words, and more. It is amazing. Our textbook publisher, McDougal Littell spent time creating some amazing right-brain activities. If you do not have the Internet at home, I know that the media center is open both Tuesday and Thursday after school. Please give me feedback on your thoughts. The address is classzone.com

Vocabulary chapter 3 was handed out yesterday; this will be due on Friday, November 2 nd. The test will also be given that day. If your child is going on the Incentive Trip, he or she will take the test on Thursday, Nov. 1 st. We are watching The Miracle Worker this week and will be writing a five paragraph essay next week over “What made Anne Sullivan a good teacher for Helen Keller”. Thursday will be reading day. Book #1 will be due November 15 th for 50 points and Book #2 will be due December 20 th for 50 points. Please let us know if you have any questions.

On Monday we took our SRI test. I will be sending home a letter with your child's newest SRI reading grade level. This quarter we will be focusing on short stories out of our new Literature Books. We will be working on comprehension, characterization and vocabulary.

In reading, we will be choosing new literature sets to begin reading as a class. We will continue to work in the Wilson ’s Reading System step 3. Book reports for this quarter will be due on Wednesday, December 19th. Each student is required to read two books at their level or approved by me and do a book report from the list. They cannot repeat a report style or book they have already used and they cannot use the book we are reading in class as one of the readings. If you have questions, please contact me. We are going to talk about priorities, setting goals, and making plans to achieving goals this week. We will also begin working on individual units of study. Each unit will cover grammar, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and reading strategies.

Life Skills

English -We are focusing on spelling basic sight words correctly for some. Others are being challenged with higher level words. We are also working on improving our writing process and getting our thoughts on paper.

Reading -Some of us are recognizing sight words in our reading. While others are being challenged to read and comprehend by answering various style questions on the reading assignment.

Math -Each student is working at their level. Some are still working on number recognition, while others are working on larger numbers into the hundred thousands.

Science -We are starting our unit on Earth Science and will continue with it over the next few weeks.

Social Studies -We are learning about rules versus laws and the impact on our lives.

 

Job Skills and Academic Skills -In Job Skills we are going to start working on paperwork and applications to get us ready to apply for jobs, housing, etc. In Academic skills, the focus is still on completing assigned homework by teachers, organizing, and reading books for the various classes. The assignment book is still a huge part of the grade this quarter, so make sure you and your child are checking it ou t.

Math: We have been working on the Pre-Algebra concepts of writing expressions. Students need to be working on multiplication facts. .

Academic Lab: In Academic Lab, your child should be using this time to get work completed from other classes, reading, or completing a packet that I have given them. Planners will be checked each day and teacher signature will be placed at bottom of that day’s column.

Ladies: Don't forget our first Girls' Night Out is tonight! Be ready to dance the night away, as Sandy Jones, Jonelle's mom, shares several different kinds of line and circle dances! Hope you and an older female can come. See Mrs. Sides or Mrs. Wilson with questions.

 

The Media Center will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4:30. Please remember that students need their school IDs to check out materials. If you did not receive an ID please notify your Advisory Teacher so they can send in a request for a temporary ID.

 

We are collecting box tops in our advisory classes. Please save those and send them to school with your child!

 

If you are looking for something to do, stop by the Hallsville Optimist Club’s haunted house located at the Hallsville Fairgrounds. We will be open October 26 from 10-?, October 27 from 7-11 pm, and Halloween night from 7-9 pm. Concessions are available, as well as other activities. All proceeds will go to helping the youth of the community.

 

Red Ribbon Week will start tomorrow thru Friday. On Tuesday, wear Red to show your commitment to "JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS" and sign our pledge banner to receive your JUST SAY NO bracelet. Wednesday is Mix-Match day, Thursday is pajama day, and Friday is Get Crazy with School Spirit Day- wear your purple and gold! Each day that you participate by dressing up and wearing your JUST SAY NO bracelet, you will receive a treat during lunch.

 

The 1st quarter incentive trip will be next Friday November 2nd and we will go see a movie and then the mall for lunch. The list of those eligible is posted in the office. Permission forms are also in the office.

"A place to be a child"

This month for character education, we are collecting supplies for Coyote Hill. Coyote Hill is a professional home of love for abused and neglected children; and also for children whose families just need a chance to regroup and get a fresh start. They provide licensed counseling and professional social work services. They also provide children with a safe and healthy place to grow, to learn, to laugh, to love; and to understand what it means to have a life that is full and complete.

Listed below are items that are on their needs list. The students are collecting these items through October and then we will donate them to Coyote Hill.
