Reading Lists

Reading is a lifetime skill that touches every aspect of a student's life.  For that reason, reading is a primary foucs in 8th grade Communication Arts.  Every quarter students are expected to select several books (see reading contract on Handouts page) to read independently.  For the most part, books need to be over 100 pages and around the students lexile level. Students reading above grade level are encouraged to talk with Mrs. Spurling or Mrs. Bryan about options.

Mark Twain Nominees are 20 books for middle school students selected by people throughout the state. Students who read 4 or more nominees are eligible to vote on the Mark Twain winner.
The Missouri Association of School Librarians annually nominates fifteen young adult books for the Gateway Readers Award.  Students in grades 9 through 12 who read at least three books on this list are eligible to vote for their favorite book in mid-March 2007.  (These books may be too mature for some 8th graders.)

Half of the books students read for 8th grade Communication Arts should be Reading Counts books on or around their individual SRI level.
