This year your child will learn many new things in reading. Below is just a summary of my sixth grade curriculum.
Students will:
*recognize and compare different genres (fiction, poetry, drama, and nonfiction).
*build vocabulary by using strategies (context clues, analyzing word parts, and word relationships).
*identify the author's purpose and main idea of a selection.
*determine the sequence of events.
*analyze the elements of fiction (plot, setting, characterization, conflict, and theme).
*evaluate text for fact and opinion.
*understand the importance of text features (charts, graphs, maps, and illustrations).
*use computers, computer programs, web sites, and reference materials to enhance reading.
*read with fluency, accuracy, and expression.
*connect reading to personal experiences.
*develop an appreciation for reading.

It is important that your child knows what classroom behavior is appropriate so that every student may learn. I have always found parents to be very supportive of good classroom behavior. If your child develops any difficulty following the rules, I will notify you. In turn, I hope you will notify me if your child has a problem academically, socially, or emotionally. I consider it a privilege to be your child's reading teacher this year.
