Old Business

A. Pastries For Parents : Annette Tessarro, Laura Kabrick and Suzanne Stillwell reported that the event was well attended. We used 37 dozen doughnuts, 4 gallons of orange juice, and three gallons of milk.

    • Candy-Gram for Valentine’s Day : Annette Tessaro reported on the upcoming Candy-gram sales. The candy-grams will be sold on Monday, February 12 th- Wednesday, February 14 th before school in the elementary building and during lunch in the middle school. Penny recruited middle school student council to help sell during lunch at the middle school. Annette said that she purchased hersey kisses to sell for 25 cents and Gabrielle Scott will design the candy-grams.
    • Skating Parties: Jennifer Blumer reported that she contacted Empire Roller Rink and set the following dates for the parties. March 10 th for the elementary students and March 17 th for the middle school students. Empire Roller Rink will charge a reduced admission of $3.50 per person. PTO will advertise the event as a charge of $2.50 and pick up the $1.00 difference. Jennifer will be the PTO representative at the March 17 th party and will ask Kristie Baumgartner to be the representative for the March 10 th party.
    • Box Tops for Education: Annette Tessaro reported that box top collections are under way and that there has been a lot of excitement over the program. Annette reminded everyone that if they register online with boxtops4education.com that the school will automatically get 2 box tops for each registrant. The collection cutoff for this period is February 15 th. Sherri Briedwell’s class will collect and count the box tops. The next collection period will begin on February 21 st and go through March 21 st. It was decided to award the top two classes in each building.
    • Teacher Appreciation Week : We discussed ways in which to recognize Hallsville School staff during the week of May 7 th-May 11 th. Penny suggested that we should recognize all staff during this period. The budget for the event is $700.00. We brainstormed on how to do this. It was suggested that we put food, such as doughnuts in the bus barn and custodian office. Annette Tessaro mentioned Krispy Crème doughnuts would donate the unsold doughnuts if someone could pick them up from the store at 11 am each day and that they would sell doughnuts to us as the reduced price of $2.50/doz. Other ideas were to solicit donations from local businesses for a “funny money” auction, or to create a gift basket to give away at the luncheon. Laura Kabrick volunteered to chair this committee.
    • Fundraisers for Playground Equipment: Suzanne Stillwell talked to Tom Baugh regarding PTO’s desired to start a campaign to raise funds for playground equipment. Mr. Baugh did not want a separate campaign because the school district already has budgeted for a playground. The members present decided it would be better to create a line item in next year’s budget for $500.00, labeled “General School Fund” with the intent to use the funds for playground and library enhancement as deemed appropriate by school officials. It was suggested that the funds raised by Candy-Gram sales and Box Top Collections could be earmarked for this fund.
    • March Open Forum for PTO Meeting : Suzanne Stillwell and Penny Fadler reported that a PTO meeting was not scheduled for March but there was one scheduled for April 16 th. The program will be Safety Night. We brainstormed about the content including: Internet safety, bullying, Dare program with McGruf , bike safety, and safety during stormy weather. We talked about getting the Boone County Sheriff’s department, Hallsville Police, Boone County Fire Protection District, school nurses and meteorologist, Sharon Ray involved in the program. Penny Fadler and Suzanne Stillwell will take the lead on organizing the program.
    • Scholarship Update: Application for PTO scholarships for High School Seniors will open on March 1 st and close April 15th. Two scholarships will be offered at $500.00 each. Applicant packages will be forwarded to Jackie Quick, chair of the Scholarship committee after April 15 th. Awards will be announced at the PTO May meeting, May 8 th.
