Parents As Teachers:  An early learning program for parents with children ages birth to five

  • Parents As Teachers is an early childhood parent education and family support program that is international in reach, serving families from pregnancy until their child enters kindergarten.
  • Our vision is that all children will develop to realize their full potential.
  • Our mission is to provide the information, support and encouragement parents need to help their children develop optimally during the crucial early years of life.
  • As a parent you are your child's first teacher and your home is their first schoolhouse.

How children benefit from Parents As Teachers

  • A 1985 independent evaluation of PAT determined that participating children were significantly more advanced than other 3 year olds in language development, social development, problem solving and other intellectual skills.
  • In 1989, these children were still ahead in first grade.  In addition, parents who participated in PAT took a far more active role in their children's schooling than parents who were not in the program.
  • In 1991, this study replicated in 37 economically and geographically diverse districts.  Parents knowledge of child development and parenting practices significantly increased for all types of families.
