5th, 6th and 7th Grade Students

The purpose of this
handbook is to provide information and suggestions for planning your child’s
summer activities in the Hallsville area.
We have presented the program guidelines and course descriptions. Established guidelines will be followed in
order to maintain consistent and equitable processing for everyone interested
in enrolling for the Summer School Program.
We
are excited about the wide range of coursework offered this year. We believe the activities are truly
student-centered, creative and challenging.
Teachers have been strongly encouraged to engage students in interactive
activities that promote, build upon and further develop critical thinking
skills.
Please read
the handbook carefully and mark the various deadlines for the program. The administrative staff is available to
assist you in answering questions you might have regarding the information
contained in the handbook. Call the Middle
School office at 696-5512 x307 for clarification and answers to your
questions. We look forward to a highly
successful and rewarding summer school program.

Hallsville R-IV 2008 Middle School Summer Program
This handbook is for students currently attending 5th, 6th
or 7th grade
8th graders may also use this
handbook if they are participating in the 8th grade credit recovery
classes or the Middle School Musical.
For HS credit classes, 8th graders should use the HS packet.

for current K-2nd , 3rd – 4th or 8th-12th
grade students, please see the Primary School, Intermediate School or High
School Summer School Packets or contact the appropriate building office or find

Purpose: The purpose of summer
school is to provide enrichment opportunities, offer exploratory classes, and
remediate deficiencies in required courses that may not be available during the
traditional school year in areas that are needed by and/or of interest to the
student. Summer school is free to all
students.
Summer
School Schedule: June 2-June 27, 2008
Intermediate building time: 8:15 am –
3:15 pm
The Middle School program will be located in the
Bus
Transportation: Summer school provides
transportation pick up and drop off services similar to the regular school year
services. Service points, routes and
schedules will be determined after summer school registration is complete. (See the Bus Transportation Request form
later in this packet.)
Breakfast
& Lunch: A breakfast and lunch will
be available at summer school in the Primary and
Discipline: All discipline policies outlined in the Student Code
of Conduct will be enforced during summer school and all related activities. Inappropriate behaviors are unacceptable
during summer school. If a student
violates the Student Code of Conduct they will be sent to the office where
their parent/guardian will be called and the situation discussed. Additional violations of the Student Code of
Conduct may result in the student’s suspension for the remainder of the summer
term.
All
students and parents/guardians will be required to complete and sign an
admittance agreement for acceptance into Hallsville R-IV Summer School stating
the student will abide by the Student Code of Conduct. (See the
Admittance Agreement later in this packet.)
Registration begins Monday, March 17
Registration
packets will be available on or before March 10. Packets will be available on-line and will
be sent home with primary and intermediate students and available in school
offices to middle school and high school students. Summer school enrollment forms will be
accepted beginning 8:00 am, Monday, March 17.
Forms should be returned to the office in the school where the student
is in class: 5th (intermediate
office) and 6th and 7th (middle school office).
Registration
forms need to be returned by Friday, May 9 at 4:00 p.m.
At that time, classes must
meet preset enrollment numbers to be offered.
Due to financial constraints, classes with small enrollments may be
cancelled or combined with other offerings.
Late registrations (those received after May 9) will be accepted on a
space available basis. Parents/Guardians
will be notified in writing of enrollment approval, class information, and
transportation provisions after May 9.
Students
from other school districts may enroll in Hallsville R-IV Summer School. These students must abide by the guidelines
of this handbook. In addition,
out-of-district summer school students will be provided and must sign in
agreement to Hallsville R-IV Schools Discipline/Student Code of Conduct,
Hallsville R-IV Computer Access Agreement, Hallsville R-IV Schools Health Information
Form, current immunizations, and the Medical Release of Information form.

Life Skills – Language Arts*-This
class is designed to assist students in learning strategies and techniques to
improve reading skills and comprehension.
Students must have teacher permission for admittance to this class.

assist students in learning strategies and techniques to improve math and
problem solving skills. Students must

Musical/Drama
# - This
musical/drama will be
produced by middle school students. Speaking parts, singing and dancing will be
combined to produce a great performance of “The Music Man”. Enrollment numbers limited. Class is filled on a first-come-first-serve
basis with priority given to in-district students.

Art and
Architecture: Building Bridges – Students will extend
their knowledge of art through a look at various structures and building those
structures.

Beginning
Guitar – Students will extend their knowledge of music and
learn to play a guitar. Students must
have their own guitar to participate in this class.
Morning 1½ hour classes Grades 5-7 Instructor: Janet Love
Brain Games –
Middle School students will learn to use deductive and inductive reasoning to
help them solve a variety of problems.
Activities such as Sudoku, Cross Sums, logic problems, and other
applications will be used to build reasoning skills.
Morning and Afternoon 1½ hour

Chess
Strategies- The students will be required to use
mathematical skills along with communication skills in the area of research,
cooperative activities, and strategic planning.
The activities planned for this unit will expect students to gain
knowledge and logic for probability through analysis, problem solving, and
critical thinking using the game of chess.
At the same time students will build character, gain patience,
integrity, and positive attitude which will lead to good sportsmanship.

Computer
Applications – Comm Arts- Students
will have the opportunity to learn more about different computer programs.
Students will be designing PowerPoint presentations, creating web pages using
DreamWeaver software, using the Paint program to produce pictures and
increasing their general computer skills.
Morning 1½ hour classes Grades 5-7 Instructor: Sue Bryan
Computer
Applications – Science- Students
will have the opportunity to learn more about different computer programs.
Students will make animated GIF’s, use Macromedia Flash, computer based probes,
and Adobe Photoshop. Students will use
the technology to create science models, explanatory movies, and data
collection to prove hypothesis.
Afternoon 1½ hour classes Grades 5-7 Instructor: Susan German
Creative Math –
Students experience
numerous hands-on math activities.
Through the projects students will gain an understanding of geometric
and spatial relationship, measurement, numbers and operations, and some algebraic
concepts. Some of the projects will include
constructing 3-D trihexaflexagons, hexahexaflexagons, 3-D cubes and stars, and
making a life size geodesic dome.

Exploratory
Science- Students study principles of matter, chemistry, earth
science and other topics in science based on grade level curriculum.

Math Booster*- This class is designed to review math facts. Instruction will involve basic mathematical
concepts and reasoning. Students will
apply math strategies and master basic math facts through practice and games.
P.E. - This class will cover core physical education
activities.
Morning & Afternoon 1½

Reading Booster*: 7th Grade- This class will revolve around fairytales & folklore. Students will review reading concepts, how to become better readers and improve their lexile reading level through reading children’s books.

Afternoon 1½ hour classes Grades 5 & 6 Instructor: Judy Roberts
Reading/Writing Workshop – In a workshop format,
students will develop skills necessary to formulate sophisticated answers
regarding reading material, create effective and formal writings, and broaden
vocabulary through daily vocabulary practice.
Morning 1½ hour classes Grades 5-7 Instructor: Monica Melton
Social Studies
Explorations- Students study
principles of history, geography, government and other topics in social studies
based on grade level curriculum.
Morning 1½ hour classes Grades 5-7 Instructor: Rachel Sides
Tenderfoot
Band/Drumline- Students extend
skills in instrumental music in this middle school band class as well as the
specialty area of the drumline in preparation for marching band.
