2008 Handbook

“Accelerated Extended Learning”

June 2-June 27, 2008

The purpose of this handbook is to provide information and suggestions for planning your child’s summer activities in the Hallsville area.  We have presented the program guidelines and course descriptions.  Established guidelines will be followed in order to maintain consistent and equitable processing for everyone interested in enrolling for the Summer School Program.

We are excited about the wide range of coursework offered this year.  We believe the activities are truly student-centered, creative and challenging.  Teachers have been strongly encouraged to engage students in interactive activities that promote, build upon and further develop critical thinking skills.

Please read the handbook carefully and mark the various deadlines for the program.  The administrative staff is available to assist you in answering questions you might have regarding the information contained in the handbook.  Call the Primary School office at 696-5512 x602 for clarification and answers to your questions.  We look forward to a highly successful and rewarding summer school program.

Purpose:  The purpose of summer school is to provide enrichment opportunities, offer exploratory classes, and remediate deficiencies in required courses that may not be available during the traditional school year in areas that are needed by and/or of interest to the student.  Summer school is free to all students.

Summer School Schedule:  June 2-June 27, 200     8

Primary building time:  8:00 am – 3:00 pm

Bus Transportation:  Summer school provides transportation pick up and drop off services similar to the regular school year services.  Service points, routes and schedules will be determined after summer school registration is complete.  (See the Bus Transportation Request form later in this packet.)

Breakfast & Lunch:  A breakfast and lunch will be available at summer school in the Primary and Intermediate Commons.  Students may also choose to bring their lunch.  The campus will remain CLOSED during the lunch period.  Therefore, no student will be allowed to leave campus for lunch.

Discipline:  All discipline policies outlined in the Student Code of Conduct will be enforced during summer school and all related activities.  Inappropriate behaviors are unacceptable during summer school.  If a student violates the Student Code of Conduct they will be sent to the office where their parent/guardian will be called and the situation discussed.  Additional violations of the Student Code of Conduct may result in the student’s suspension for the remainder of the summer term.

All students and parents/guardians will be required to complete and sign an admittance agreement for acceptance into Hallsville R-IV Summer School stating the student will abide by the Student Code of Conduct. (See the Admittance Agreement later in this packet.)

Attendance:  The summer school program is a concentrated curriculum.  Good attendance is vital to students’ success.  It is highly recommended that all students enroll in a full day of summer school and miss no more than 3 days.  Students who are taking summer school to recover credit or as a provision for promotion to the next grade may miss no more than 3 days to earn credit in summer school.

Perfect Attendance:  Students achieving perfect attendance will qualify for rewards & prizes.  Students may qualify for weekly attendance awards.  Note:  Any absence, including excused absences such as Doctor Appointments, Tardies and Discipline Referrals disqualify students from attendance rewards.

Registration begins Monday, March 17

Registration packets will be available on or before March 10.   Packets will be available on-line and will be sent home with primary and intermediate students and available in school offices to middle school and high school students.  Summer school enrollment forms will be accepted beginning 8:00 am, Monday, March 17.  Forms should be returned to the current classroom teacher for teacher recommendation or comments. Hallsville R-IV School District students will be given first priority for registration.  Most classes are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis with priority consideration given to students with teacher recommendations for classes to meet specific academic needs.  Priority may also be given to students attending a full day of summer school over students enrolled in only a half day.   Class offerings and schedules will be subject to enrollment and teacher availability.

Registration forms need to be returned by Friday, May 9 at 4:00 p.m.

At that time, classes must meet preset enrollment numbers to be offered.  Due to financial constraints, classes with small enrollments may be cancelled or combined with other offerings.  Late registrations (those received after May 9) will be accepted on a space available basis.  Parents/Guardians will be notified in writing of enrollment approval, class information, and transportation provisions after May 9.

Students from other school districts may enroll in Hallsville R-IV Summer School.  These students must abide by the guidelines of this handbook.  In addition, out-of-district summer school students will be provided and must sign in agreement to Hallsville R-IV Schools Discipline/Student Code of Conduct, Hallsville R-IV Computer Access Agreement, Hallsville R-IV Schools Health Information Form, current immunizations, and the Medical Release of Information form.
