Kim George Becking, HHS Class of 1989
Kim George Becking, HHS Class of 1989, has deep roots in Hallsville. Born and raised here by her parents, Ray and Elaine George, Kim carried the values of her hometown into a career that has taken her from public service and law to national stages as a bestselling author, leadership expert, and sought-after speaker. After graduating from Hallsville, she earned a BS in Marketing with a minor in legal studies from Missouri State University, where she was active in student government. She went on to complete her law degree at the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 1997.
What are you doing now?
My career started in Kansas City, working at a major law firm and serving in community affairs and city planning for the mayor’s office. I later launched a public relations and public affairs company, Momentum Public Strategies. At 30, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, an experience that changed the direction of my life and work. I co-authored Nordies at Noon, a book about that journey that became a bestseller.
After treatment — and now 24 years cancer-free — I shifted my focus to patient advocacy and motivational speaking, helping people and organizations navigate change with both grace and grit. I founded Momentum Motivation, a leadership development firm offering speaking, training, and consulting for groups ranging from Fortune 100 companies to nonprofits. My work centers on resilience, growth, and helping people show up as the best version of themselves.
How did Hallsville Schools prepare you for life?
I learned you need your community, and you need to lean into your community. You should not be afraid to ask for help. The Hallsville community was a safe space. I felt that the whole school supported me — not just teachers but the lunch ladies, bus drivers, everyone. I had teachers who let me into their world. Mrs. Fuson even had our writing class at her home for dinner.
What is a favorite memory from school at Hallsville?
Our cheerleading squad was the first one from Hallsville to win the competition at the state level under Coach Carol Maher. I also have good memories of selling Tom Watt merchandise for three years to earn the money for our senior trip, which was a cruise to the Bahamas. Another good memory was going to FBLA, speech, and drama competitions — and now I am a professional speaker.
What part of Hallsville did you take with you?
The belief that community matters. I grew up watching my parents stay deeply engaged in the Hallsville community, and that showed me what people can accomplish when they work together and support one another.
What advice would you give students today?
Don’t waste time — make every day count. You’re going to fail, and that’s how you grow. You don’t need everything figured out, and you should never be afraid to ask for help. Believe in yourself, seek out people who are different from you, and assume the good in others. Motivation will get you started, but it’s the tools, habits, and actions that keep you moving. And remember: Grit without grace isn’t sustainable.
