EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR: MRS. CRANE with Hallsville Chamber logo

Congratulations to Hallsville Middle School 7th grade math teacher Mrs. Katy Crane on being named the 2026 Hallsville Educator of the Year! Each year, the Hallsville Chamber of Commerce recognizes an outstanding educator for their dedication and contributions to the Hallsville School District.

Mrs. Crane joined the Hallsville School District in 2019 as a middle school math teacher, bringing three years of prior teaching experience at Gentry Middle School. Her colleague and fellow educator, David Nugent, shared:

"I have co-taught 7th grade math with Mrs. Crane for nearly a decade and I believe that she is the epitome of what a professional educator should look like. I often admire Mrs. Crane’s professional skills, because she makes teaching and classroom management look effortless and easy. Mrs. Crane is able to engage students from all ability levels and backgrounds in math. I have seen students who traditionally may struggle academically or have a dislike of math, become engaged and active participants in Mrs. Crane’s math class. She incorporates a wide range of creative activities and real world applications in order to promote classroom participation."

Through her dedication to inspiring students, building confidence, creating a positive learning environment, and supporting her colleagues, Mrs. Crane brings our district’s vision of improving lives through learning to life every day.

Mrs. Crane will be formally recognized at the Hallsville Chamber of Commerce's 2026 Annual Awards Banquet on Monday, December 7.

Kayci Fadler McGuire, HHS Class of 2010

Kayci Fadler McGuire attended Hallsville Schools from kindergarten through senior year. She is the daughter of Scott and Penny Fadler. At age three, Kayci came down with meningococcal septicemia, which resulted in the amputation of her right leg at the knee and her right arm above the elbow. She lives in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with her husband and newborn son.

What education or training did you complete after high school, and what are you doing now?

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and Marine Biology and currently work in the Interactive Animals Program Department as a Wild Kingdom Pavilion Keeper at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

How did Hallsville School prepare you for life?

Hallsville Schools prepared me for life through the academic knowledge I gained, the social connections I made, and the personal growth I experienced. Hallsville Schools prepared me for future education, career paths, and the life skills needed to build a successful future.

What lessons from Hallsville Schools did you take with you?

I will never forget the quadratic formula that I learned from Mrs. Haes, sung to the tune of the Gilligan's Island theme song.

What is a favorite memory from school at Hallsville?

I can’t narrow it down to just one memory!

  • I was a teacher’s kid and spent a lot of time making memories with all the other teacher’s kids and teachers after school.
  • I really enjoyed attending all the basketball games and cheering on the team as well as socializing with all my friends.
  • Homecoming Lip Sync was another highlight. My class kicked butt at this every year, even as freshmen.

2027-2028 DISTRICT CALENDAR

The Hallsville Board of Education approved the 2027-2028 district calendar at its October meeting. This calendar includes the same number of instructional hours as the 2026-2027 calendar, and the length of the instructional day will remain the same. Based on how Winter Break falls next year, the district has the flexibility to maintain 1,070 instructional hours. The calendar also includes a full week of spring break, with the school year ending before Memorial Day.

OCTOBER BOARD HIGHLIGHTS WITH h LOGO

Below are highlights from the open session of the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The full agenda with document links is available on the district website.  The next regular session meeting is Wednesday, November 18, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the primary cafeteria.

CSIP GOAL 3: QUALITY GOVERNANCE

Demo and Parking Project: The Board received two quotes to finish the demolition and install a gravel parking lot at the property the District purchased in June 2025, located immediately east of the Intermediate School. The Board approved Gingerich Excavating LLC's quote for $36,500.

District Assessment Plan: In accordance with board policy, this annually reviewed plan outlines the district’s implementation framework for student testing, test security protocols, and data dissemination to ensure systematic instructional oversight across the district.

A resolution authorizing the defeasance of a portion of the District’s outstanding General Obligation Bonds, Series 2022*: As the District’s Debt Service balance is nearing its capacity, it is recommended to make a defeasance (prepayment) of $350,000 towards outstanding debt in relation to Series 2022 General Obligation Bonds. This defeasance would allow the district to maintain its current voter-approved debt service levy. The Board approved the Bond Defeasance as presented.

A-F Report Card: Earlier this year, Governor Mike Kehoe issued an executive order directing the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to develop a statewide accountability system that assigns letter grades of A, B, C, D or F to public schools and school districts. The A–F Grade Card is intended to provide families with a simple, transparent, and easy-to-understand report of school performance and academic growth. We expect the A–F School and District Grade Card reports to be released publicly following the December meeting of the Missouri State Board of Education.

The new framework evaluates schools using measures of student academic achievement and growth, with additional indicators for high schools, including graduation rates and college- and career-readiness.

The initial grade cards are based on data from the 2024–2025 school year and represent the first year of this new system. The system is currently in its pilot phase, with additional measures expected to be incorporated in future years.

It is important to understand that the new A–F Grade Card system will not replace Missouri's existing Annual Performance Report (APR), which is used to evaluate school and district performance and determine accreditation status. The two accountability systems will operate separately and use different measures to evaluate school performance.

CSIP GOAL AREA 2: EXCELLENT SCHOOLS

State Assessment Results: Over the next several months, DESE will release several important reports. The district received assessment results earlier this fall; APR data is expected in November, and the state continues to update its plan to implement an A-F report card to meet Executive Order 26-01 and establish a transparent, annual A-F grading framework for Missouri public and charter schools. This month, the Board reviewed preliminary 2026 assessment data.

Overall results:

  • In 2026, Hallsville students statistically met or slightly exceeded the Missouri average in both percent proficient and advanced and/or in the MAP Performance Index (MPI) calculation for most assessed areas.
  • Longitudinal results demonstrate that Hallsville students consistently meet or exceed the state in nearly all content areas and grade levels.
  • Because Hallsville cohort sizes change from year to year but are typically around 100 students, each student accounts for nearly 1% of the total students at each achievement level. This small cohort size means Hallsville's annual results will naturally fluctuate more than the state's broader averages.

Changes in Testing and Reporting: Beginning in 2023, state assessment requirements changed, impacting how some results can be compared:
  • 8th Grade Math & Algebra I: The 2023 scores reflect a different student group than prior years and cannot be directly compared.
  • Algebra I EOC (2023 Outlier): Results were inflated due to two 8th-grade cohorts taking the test that year. The 2024 results reflect the new, ongoing testing structure.
  • 8th Grade Dip (2023 Onward): 8th-grade scores now exclude students who took the Algebra I EOC.

Because of these shifts, the most reliable way to interpret assessment data is to compare Hallsville’s performance trends alongside Missouri’s overall results rather than focusing on a single year’s data point.

attendance update

Understanding Our 90/90 Attendance Goal

As part of the Hallsville School District's Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP), one of our goals is to improve student attendance. Regular attendance is important to student learning and academic success.

Our district uses a measure called 90/90 attendance, which means our goal is for at least 90% of students to attend school at least 90% of the time. This helps us track how consistently students attend school and identify areas for improvement.

At the end of the first quarter, all four buildings were meeting our 90/90 attendance goal!

  • Hallsville High School: 92.5%

  • Hallsville Middle School: 91.3%

  • Hallsville Intermediate School: 90.6%

  • Hallsville Primary School: 92.3%

  • District Average: 91.5%

We will continue sharing attendance updates throughout the school year as we work together to support student success.
