Marcus Long, Class of 1986, has deep family ties to Hallsville Schools. He is the son of the late Blair Long and Sue Long, and his family’s connection to the district spans generations. His grandparents served the district as a teacher and school board member, while his mother, aunts, and uncle were teachers and administrators. Today, that connection continues with his brother, Matthew Long, who is the Facilities Lead for the district.
Marc recently retired after a decade of serving as President of Mount Marty University, a Catholic college in South Dakota. A lifelong learner, he is now studying to become a minister and plans to begin pastoring at a small church near his home in northwest Missouri.
How did Hallsville School prepare you for life?
My Hallsville education made me curious about the world around me, which is something I’ve tried to pass along to my students throughout my higher education career. I remember arguing politics in David Malaney’s composition class, not wanting to disappoint Mary Clark in middle school English, and astonishing Rich Trinklein with my lack of mathematical reasoning ability. Fortunately, I grew into that in time for my graduate statistics classes.
What kind of post high school training or schooling did you have?
I graduated from Mizzou in 1991 with degrees in political science and history. After working at the University for several years, I went to graduate school and earned a master’s in education from Mizzou in 2007 and a PhD in education from the University of Missouri–St. Louis in 2015.
What is a favorite memory from school at Hallsville?
Managing to never have a relative for a teacher, except my mom for one day in third grade! And the lifelong friendships with Duane, Todd, and Junior. We still text and talk regularly.
What part of Hallsville did you take with you?
All of it. Hallsville is with me every day. My mother, grandmother, two aunts, and an uncle all taught there, and my grandfather served on the school board for 16 years in the 1950s and 1960s. My brother works there today. I substituted at HHS when I was in college and watched more than a few basketball games when I served as a Hallsville police officer for a decade in the 1990s. Although I live four hours away now, not a week goes by that I don’t think about the experiences I had in that community. I’m very grateful I grew up there and started my family there.
What advice would you give students today?
Just know you can do anything you put your mind to. Use that tight-knit, supportive Hallsville community to launch an amazing life.

In September 2025, the Hallsville Board of Education approved the 2026-2027 district calendar. This calendar has the same number of hours as our 2025-2026 calendar and the length of the instructional day will remain the same. Based on how Winter Break falls next year, the District has the flexibility to maintain 1,070 hours without being in session on any Mondays in the fall. This calendar includes a full week of spring break, and the school year ends before Memorial Day.
